Open surgical and other joint operations: Open surgical refixation and plasty of the capsular ligaments in the shoulder joint: Superior capsule plasty
You have had an operation on your shoulder joint.
The shoulder joint is the joint between the shoulder blade and the humerus. There is a flat recess to the side of the shoulder blade. This is the glenoid cavity. In the glenoid cavity is the spherical upper end of the humerus. This is the head of the humerus. The shoulder has a muscle group made up of 4 muscles. The muscles begin to the front and rear of the shoulder blade. Tendons attach them to the humerus at the top. These muscles stabilize the shoulder joint and are involved in various arm movements.
The shoulder joint is surrounded by a joint capsule that protects and stabilizes it. If muscles, tendons or the joint capsule are damaged, the shoulder joint can become unstable. The humeral head may then no longer be held firmly in the glenoid cavity. This can cause problems.
You have had surgery on the upper part of your shoulder joint capsule. Surgery like this may involve reinforcing or replacing the joint capsule by synthetic tissue, for example.
