Endoprosthetic joint and bone replacement: Implantation of an endoprosthesis in upper extremity joints: Total endoprosthesis shoulder joint: Reverse

You have been given an artificial shoulder joint.

The shoulder joint is the joint between the shoulder blade and the humerus. There is a flat recess to the side of the shoulder blade. This is the glenoid cavity. In the glenoid cavity is the spherical upper end of the humerus. This is the head of the humerus.

You have had your glenoid cavity and the head of your humerus replaced by synthetic material. This is also known as a total prosthesis or endoprosthesis.

Your artificial shoulder joint involved changing the natural alignment of the recess and the ball-shaped end. This type of artificial shoulder joint involves attaching a half-sphere to the shoulder blade. A cup is attached to the top end of the humerus.
