Nuclear medicine therapy: Therapy with unsealed radionuclides: Endovascular brachytherapy with unsealed radionuclides: Endovascular brachytherapy with liquid Rhenium‑188 using closed balloon system, coronary artery

A radioactive drug has been used to treat one of your coronary arteries.

The heart muscle is supplied with oxygen-rich blood via the coronary arteries. The coronary arteries are blood vessels that run around the outside of the heart.

For the treatment, a thin tube was first inserted into a blood vessel at the groin or arm. This tube was further advanced via the blood vessel. Various instruments can be pushed onto the tip of the tube. For example, the instruments can be used to expand a constricted blood vessel. Drugs can also be injected into the blood vessel via the tip of the tube. You have had a radioactive drug injected into the blood vessel. This is to keep the blood vessel open for longer. X-ray images are taken during the treatment. These show clearly whether the tip of the tube is in the right place.
