8-546.1:
Cytostatic chemotherapy, immunotherapy and antiretroviral therapy: Hyperthermic chemotherapy: Hyperthermic intrathoracic chemotherapy (HITHOC)
During an operation, heated chemotherapy drugs were inserted into your chest cavity.
This kind of chemotherapy is used in cancers. The tissue in the body is made up of cells. With cancer, the cells multiply uncontrollably, which leads to a malignant neoplasm (abnormal growth of tissue) developing. The cancer cells can destroy the healthy tissue and spread throughout the body.
The lungs and the heart are in the chest cavity. Cancer cells have accumulated in your chest cavity. During an operation, tissues that were affected by cancer cells were removed. However, individual cancer cells can remain behind in the chest cavity. To kill these very small remnants of cancer cells, chemotherapy was carried out during the operation. For this purpose, the chest cavity was flushed with heated chemotherapy drugs. The drugs were pumped into the chest cavity via tubes. To enhance the effect of the chemotherapy, the drugs were heated.
