Blood cell transfusion: Autologous transfusion (collection and reinfusion of the patient’s own blood): Mechanical autotransfusion (cell salvage) with irradiation
You lost blood during an operation. You were given some of this blood back during the operation.
Blood is made up of a liquid part and different blood cells, among other things. The liquid part of the blood is also called blood plasma. Blood plasma is made up of water, among other things. Blood plasma carries nutrients and endogenous substances, such as messenger substances. The blood cells include the red blood cells, the white blood cells and the platelets. The red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs throughout the body. White blood cells are part of the body’s immune system. They fight pathogens. Platelets are important for blood clotting.
If blood vessels are damaged during an operation, the patient can lose a lot of blood. This blood you lost was collected and cleansed in a special machine. The blood was also radiated in order to kill off changed cells. You were then given some of this blood back via a blood vessel.
