Blood is made up of a liquid part and different blood cells, among other things. The liquid part of the blood is also called blood plasma. Blood plasma is made up of water, among other things. Blood plasma carries nutrients and endogenous substances, such as messenger substances. With some disorders, certain substances in the blood plasma are changed, or there are too many of them. Substances like these include blood fats and certain proteins. Then the blood plasma can be replaced in order to remove these substances from the body.

To replace your blood plasma your blood was routed through a tube to a special machine. This machine separates the blood into the blood plasma and the blood cells. Then the remaining blood cells, along with the new blood plasma, were put back into your body. Sometimes, too, a protein-rich fluid is used instead of the blood plasma.
