Extracorporeal circulation and treatment of blood: Isolated limb perfusion
The blood supply in your arm or leg was temporarily separated from the blood circulation.
The heart pumps blood through the body. In the process, the blood flows through blood vessels in a circulation. This blood circulation supplies all parts of the body with oxygen and nutrients.
Sometimes a person needs larger amounts of certain medications in an arm or leg. Then the blood vessels there can be temporarily separated from the rest of the blood circulation. In this way, the medication does not get to the rest of the body, where it is not needed and could be harmful.
A special machine then pumps the blood through the relevant arm or leg. In this way the tissue continues to get an adequate supply of oxygen.
Additional indicator
If necessary, additional letters are appended to OPS codes to indicate which side of the body is affected.
- L: Left
- R: Right
- B: Both sides
