A24.1: Acute and fulminating melioidosis

You have been infected by melioidosis.

Melioidosis is caused by certain bacteria. These bacteria are mostly found in Asia, Australia and Africa. The bacteria occur in water and the soil there. You can get infected if you get the bacteria in your mouth or inhale them. The bacteria can also get into your skin via lesions.

During the first 3 weeks of the illness, you can have a high temperature and a cough. You may also have sore limbs. You may also have inflamed lungs and be very ill. With inflamed lungs, you may find breathing more difficult than usual, or have chest pain.
