Die Bakterien können in Vögeln, Nagern und anderen Tieren vorkommen. Man kann sich anstecken, wenn man Kontakt zu befallenen Tieren oder ihren Ausscheidungen hat. Man kann sich auch anstecken, wenn man verunreinigte Lebensmittel isst.
