M76.3: Iliotibial band syndrome

The aponeurosis on the outside of your leg is being strained.

There are various muscles and tendons in the thigh. Tendons are made up of very firm connective tissue. Tendons attach muscles to bones. The tendons of some muscles in the thigh form a broad aponeurosis. The aponeurosis starts in the thigh and connects to the tibia just below the knee. It is located on the side of the leg that is turned away from the other leg.

The aponeurosis can get strained when someone does a lot of exercise, such as running or cycling. When the aponeurosis is strained, it is also known as runner’s knee. The strain may make the knee painful.
