P03.4: Fetus and newborn affected by caesarean delivery

The Caesarean delivery caused damage to health.

A Cesarean section is an operation. You can be fully sedated and sleep for this operation. However, it is also possible for just a part of the body to be numbed. The first step in a C-section is to make an incision in the lower abdomen. This provides access to the uterus where the child is. The wall of the uterus is also cut. This makes an artificial opening through which the child can be born. The placenta is also retrieved from the uterus this way. The placenta grows in the womb and nourishes the child during pregnancy.

A Caesarean delivery can damage the child's health. Damage to health may, for example, be an injury or caused by problems with the oxygen supply. Damage can be long-term or just temporary.
