P11.0: Cerebral oedema due to birth injury

The child’s brain was damaged during the birth, so it is swollen.

The brain is made up of several areas. For example, the cerebrum is used to think and plan actions. In the cerebellum, movements are initialized and coordinated. The brain stem is responsible for various unconscious tasks such as breathing. The brain stem passes into the spinal cord.

There are different reasons why the child’s brain may get damaged. For example, the brain can get damaged if there are problems with the blood circulation system and oxygen supply. An injury to the head during the birth may also be the cause.

When the brain is damaged, it can swell up. When the brain swells up, it can become compressed inside the head. The brain may suffer further damage as a result.

There can be various indications of swelling in the child’s brain. For example, the child may be restless and cry. But an unusual sleepiness may also be noticeable. There may be seizures or vomiting. And you may be able to feel a bulging fontanelle on the child's head. Fontanelles are soft spots between the skull bones that, over time, turn into bone.
