Q79.3: Gastroschisis

Your abdominal wall has not developed properly. Organs from your abdominal cavity have therefore shifted outwards. This condition is congenital, which means you were born with it.

No one knows the exact reason why your abdominal wall didn’t develop properly before you were born.

In your case, a hole has formed in your abdominal wall. This hole often develops laterally next to the belly button. Your intestine has moved outwards through this hole. However, your stomach or bladder may also extend outwards, for example. The abdominal organs outside the body are usually susceptible to pathogens and may become inflamed as a result. The intestinal loops outside the body are frequently swollen and sometimes stuck to each other. It is also possible for parts of the bowel to die off.

Having abdominal organs outside the body can make you seriously ill.
