R60.1: Generalized oedema

You have too much fluid in your body.

Various places in the body measure how much fluid is present in it. There are such measuring stations for instance in the kidneys and in the right heart atrium. These measuring stations use messenger substances to control how much fluid is excreted. The blood salts also affect how much fluid is present in the body. A large part of the fluid is excreted via the kidneys.

You can also have too much fluid in your body because of various diseases. If the kidneys are no longer working properly, they may excrete less fluid. As a result, more fluid remains in the body. In addition, when the heart is no longer pumping well enough, fluid may accumulate in the body. You may also have too much fluid in your body if you drink too much.

Fluid has built up all over the body in the tissue under your skin. This tissue is swollen as a result.
