ICD-Code T86.09: Graft-versus-host disease, unspecified

After you were given immune cells or blood stem cells from another person, you had problems.

Stem cells are cells that can develop into different types of cells. Blood cells develop from the blood stem cells. In adults, blood stem cells are mainly found inside some bones. From there, the mature blood cells are released into the blood. A small amount of blood stem cells also enters the blood. Blood is made up of a liquid part and different blood cells, among other things. The blood cells include the red blood cells, the white blood cells and the platelets. White blood cells are part of the body’s immune system. They fight pathogens.

Foreign immune cells can be obtained, for example, using the blood stem cells of another person. The foreign immune cells may, after just a short time, attack the tissue in the body. Immune cells that attack and damage the tissue in the body can also lead to problems later.

When the body comes into contact with foreign immune cells, the skin or digestive organs, for example, can be damaged. If the skin was damaged, you may have a rash, for example. If the digestive organs were damaged, you may have abdominal pains or diarrhea, for example.
