Operations on spleen and bone marrow: Removal of hematopoietic stem cells from bone marrow and peripheral blood for transplantation and of peripheral blood cells for transfusion: Hematopoietic stem cells from bone marrow: For autologous donation
Stem cells have been taken from your bone marrow. These stem cells are to be transferred back to you later.
Stem cells are cells that can develop into different types of cells. For example, blood cells can develop from stem cells. Stem cells are found in the blood and inside some bones.
Stem cells are usually extracted from the pelvic bone. To do so, a large needle is pushed through the skin into the bone. Inside is the bone marrow, where the stem cells are. The needle is used to extract bone marrow with stem cells from various locations.
You were anesthetized for this intervention. So the person is unconscious and does not feel any pain as the stem cells are extracted.
