Open surgical and other joint operations: Open surgical operations on the patella and its supporting structures: Reconstruction of the medial patellofemoral ligament [MPFL]
You have had an operation on a ligament that is meant to hold your kneecap in the right position.
The kneecap sits at the front of the knee. It protects the knee joint. It is also important for knee movement. When you bend and straighten the knee, the kneecap slides along the femur. Tough tissue connects the kneecap to the muscle at the front of the thigh and to the shinbone. Various ligaments made out of connective tissue help to keep the kneecap in the right position at the front of the femur.
You have had an operation on the ligament that runs between your kneecap and your femur on the inside of your leg. The inside of the leg is the side that points towards the other leg. The purpose of the ligament is to prevent your kneecap from slipping towards the outside of your leg.
The operation repaired this ligament. A piece of your own tendon can be used to repair the ligament, for example. Tendons are made up of very firm connective tissue. Tendons attach muscles to bones. The piece of tendon is attached to the bone and connects the kneecap and the femur.
