8-177.1:
Lavage: Therapeutic irrigation of retroperitoneal space with drain in situ and temporary abdominal wall closure: With temporary wound closure (programmed lavage)
The space behind your abdominal cavity has been washed out more than once with a fluid.
Between the abdominal cavity and back, there is a space inside the body that contains a lot of connective tissue and fat. The kidneys, pancreas, part of the large intestine and aorta for instance are located in this space.
When substances such as pus or blood accumulate in certain parts of the body, it can be harmful. To remove such substances, the areas can be washed out with a fluid. The purpose of the fluid is to loosen and absorb the substances. Sometimes the fluid can also contain certain agents. The fluid is then removed once more.
To wash out the space behind your abdominal cavity, a surgical incision was made in your skin to open the space behind your abdominal cavity. Between the washouts, the wound was not immediately stitched, but rather temporarily covered by a synthetic material.
