Many nerves run from the spinal cord and brain to the organs, skin and muscles in the body. You had a painkilling drug administered directly into one of these nerves.
If a painkilling drug is injected directly into a nerve, pain in the relevant area can be treated very precisely.
Your skin was pricked with a needle so that the medication would be delivered in the right place.
