A69.2: Lyme disease

You have been infected with borrelia.

Borrelia are specific bacteria. They are transmitted by ticks.

If you are infected with borrelia, the skin around the tick bite may form a red circle. Sometimes you will feel weak and the lymph nodes will swell up. The lymph nodes are small bean-shaped objects. They are found throughout the body. Lymph nodes filter the tissue fluid. They are part of the defense system.

With this disease, you may not have any symptoms for a while. But the borrelia can spread in the body and damage various areas. So for example, the joints can become inflamed or changes occur on the skin. The nervous system can also be damaged. The nervous system includes all the nerves in the body, as well as the brain and the spinal cord. The nerves run from the brain and spinal cord into the body. They convey information in the body. The symptoms depend on which area of the nervous system is damaged.
