K22.7: Barrett oesophagus
The mucous membrane of your gullet is changed.
The oesophagus or gullet connects the mouth with the stomach. It is a muscular tube. The muscles in the oesophagus move food into the stomach. The inside of the oesophagus is hollow and lined with mucous membrane.
If gastric acid runs back out of the stomach into the oesophagus, it damages the mucous membrane in the oesophagus. Minor damage heals easily and new mucous membrane forms in the oesophagus. If the mucous membrane in the oesophagus is repeatedly damaged over a period of time, a different type of mucous membrane can form where the damage is. This different type of mucous membrane looks like mucous membrane from the stomach. This should protect the oesophagus from further damage. Over time however, cancer can develop more easily than normal from this different type of mucous membrane.
